MISSION

The mission of the Blacksburg Regional Youth Symphony Orchestra is to provide a unique musical, educational and cultural experience and discipline for young musicians, fostering individual discipline and nurturing a lifelong love and respect for the arts while enhancing the cultural development and quality of life in our community.

MEMBERSHIP

The Blacksburg Regional Youth Symphony Orchestra is our region's premiere orchestra, the only one of its kind in our extended community.

Auditions for strings, woodwinds, brass and percussion are scheduled periodically throughout the year and are required for placement.

Membership is based solely on proficiency. Current membership includes fifty-five student musicians between the ages of nine and eighteen from numerous commmunities including Blacksburg, Christiansburg, Dublin, Floyd, Narrows, Pilot, Pulaski, Radford, Riner, Salem, Willis and Bluefield WV.

REHEARSALS

Weekly rehearsals are scheduled within the parameters of the public school calendar.
Performances are open to the public.

CONCERT DRESS

Concerts are scheduled through out the year and open to the public.
In order to provide a professional and uniform appearance, the following dress code is required for concerts.
Any attire which distracts from the music is considered unacceptable.

Gentlemen:

White tuxedo shirt, black bow tie, black pants, black belt, black socks and black shoes.

Ladies:
White tuxedo blouse, black bow tie, black pants or tea-length or longer black skirt, black hose and black shoes. No jewelry, no colored nail polish, no skirts with long slits, and hair tied back.

ATTENDANCE

In keeping with the purpose of the BRYSO to provide a quality musical experience for its members, all students are responsible to their colleagues, themselves, and ultimately to the music itself. Therefore, once selected to become a member of the BRYSO, it is the responsibility of each member to:

*Attend all rehearsals and performances
*Arrive at rehearsals in time to warm up
*Prepare the music before each rehearsal

It is this type of serious commitment to the ensemble that will help to ensure a quality musical experience for all members of the orchestra. It is, however, understood that there may be conflicts as a result of illness, death in the family or school/religious related activities.

RESPONSIBILITIES

* Proper behavior is expected at all times.
* No gum or other refreshment is allowed into the rehearsal or concert hall. The consumption of any food item in rehearsal is considered disrespectful to the Conductor and to the music.
* No member is allowed to leave the grounds during breaks.
* All members are responsible for being able to perform their own parts. This requires practice of the music at home and help from the musician's private teacher.
* It is the player's responsibility to bring their folder, music, and a pencil to every rehearsal.

JUNIOR STRINGS

Nurturing and providing young string students with their first orchestral training in preparation for playing with the Blacksburg Regional Youth Symphony Orchestra, the premiere orchestra training program in our extended community.

FRIENDS

BRYSO invites you to become a Friend of the BRYSO Orchestra. The only cost is your time and interest in making friends and helping the orchestra continue to provide Great music right at home! We have many interesting volunteer opportunities for you to choose from depending upon your interests and time availability.
